High School Field
Manitoba High School Field Lacrosse League (MHSFLL)
The MHSFLL has been in existence since the late 1980’s. Teachers who were in the physical education field at the time had introduced the game of inter-lacrosse to their Junior High students. Because of the interest these teachers started a annual Junior High inter-lacrosse tournament. A number of these teachers then moved into the High School system and wanted to continue the tradition of lacrosse so they subsequently started a High School Field Lacrosse program.
The MHSFLL is sanctioned by the Manitoba Lacrosse Association. It is one of the longest running programs of the MLA and has produced a number of top field lacrosse players who have gone on to be members of Manitoba’s provincial field lacrosse teams. The rebirth of field lacrosse culminated in 1990 when our Junior Men’s team, made up of all-stars from the High School League, won the National Championship. (First Nations Trophy).
The MHSFLL runs from the end of April (depending upon the weather) to the end of May. Traditionally league games have been played on Monday and Wednesday. Games are usually played after school and where possible double headers are scheduled. Upon the conclusion of the High School Field regular season the MLA sanctions a Provincial Championship which historically is the first weekend in June.
The MHSFLL gets many of its players from the minor box lacrosse system. Currently there are field lacrosse programs for high-school aged players in the following schools in Winnipeg, Powerview, Fort Alexander and Beausejour.
