Trevor Bruyere

Tragically on Thursday January 17, 2008 Ivan Trevor Bruyere aged

34 of Sagkeeng First Nation departed from this life.

Trevor graduated from High School in 1990.  His love of sports

included lacrosse, hockey, basketball and horseshoes.  He will

always be remembered for his positive "go hard or go home

attitude".  Trevor was an avid lacrosse player wearing #11 for the

Ojibway Nationals.

A memorial service honouring Trevor's life was held on

Tuesday January 29, 2008 at the Victoria Beach Sports Club.

Trevor was a member of the 1990 Manitoba Provincial Junior Men's

Field Lacrosse team that captured the Gold medal at the National

Championships that year when it was held in Winnipeg and hosted

by the MLA.  Upon graduating from the Junior Field program Trevor

moved up to the Provincial Senior Men's Field program.  The

Senior Men's team captured the Division 2 National Championship

on three occasions.  Trevor was a member of two of those teams

winning the Gold medal twice.   He was a member of the Sagkeeng

Ojibway Lacrosse program and was a talented box lacrosse

player as well, having played this version of the game for numerous

years.

Some family and friends have started a Facebook group in memory

of Trevor.  The Facebook group is called IN MEMORY OF IVAN

TREVOR BRUYERE #11 OJIBWAY NATIONALS.  The group is

looking for lots of photos from former teammates.  If people could

assist this group they would be grateful.

Winnipeg Minor Lacrosse/Prairie Lacrosse

League Status

The PLL Board of Directors and the WMLA Executive Committee

have met to discuss the feasibility of creating a new Box Lacrosse

entity that would encompass all Box Lacrosse for the Winnipeg and

surrounding areas.

Both groups have agreed that we should proceed with the

formation of a committee to create a new Constitution and By-Laws

that would become effective for the 2008 season.  Individuals from

both groups will be contacted to form this committee.  We are

hoping to start this process immediately after the MLA Strategic

Planning session that will be held on March 10th.  Once the

committee has formulated the new Constitution & By-Laws the

document would then be brought forward to the MLA Board of

Directors for review and acceptance/approval.

In discussions with the WMLA Executive there was a proposal that

WMLA for a period of one year (2007), integrate the Junior portion

of the PLL under their jurisdiction.  This proposal was accepted by

the WMLA group.  The WMLA would be responsible for the

registration and collection of funds, all disciplinary action, rules,

scheduling of games and officials and arena rentals.  In a nutshell

the Junior group would be added into the WMLA umbrella.

Players that participated in the PLL last year that still have

outstanding debts, are still considered a member in bad

standing until their respective debt is paid to the MLA.

Under 16 and Under 19 Field

National Championships

The MLA would like to congratulate both our Under 16 and Under 19 Field teams

for their showing at the recent National Championships held in Victoria, B.C.

The U16 squad defeated Edmonton 13 to 11 in the 7th vs. 8th. place game.

Congratulations to Jordan McKay for being named to the All-Star team in the attack

position.  Manitoba individual game stars were Ricky Kraychuk (2 games), Jordan

McKay, Eric Whettell and Brett Morrison.  Well done players!

Manitoba Under 19 Field Team - Best Placing Since 2000

Our U19 squad finished with a 2 win and 2 loss record after the round robin portion

of play.  This put the team in the 3rd. vs 4th. place game against Hamilton.  After a

hard fought game the U19 team went down to defeat.  This is the best finish our

U19 team has had since 2000 when that team captured the Bronze medal.

Congratulations players and staff for a job well done.  The MLA would also like to

congratulate Scott Davidson and Drew Dickie for being named to the All-Star team in

the midfield and goalie positions respectively.  In addition Scott was named All-Star

Midfielder for the entire tournament and Drew was named the All-Star Goalie.

Kyle McCartney and Andy Szczepanski.
